Antiparticulate filters or diesel particulate filters (DPF) are, probably, one of the most delicate vehicle parts to clean due to the large amount of soot and other particles that builds up inside of them as a result of fuel combustion.
Although that is exactly the filter’s function, the truth is that it comes a time when we have to do something about it: either we change it or we find a way to clean it and make it look like new.
Changing it can be quite expensive. We tend to think that the filter should be relatively affordable, but, depending on the vehicle, the price of a new filter could be higher than what we budgeted.
We then start considering how to clean it, which can also pose a few problems. The internal structure of an antiparticulate filter is very complex: it is made of small ceramic porous cells that capture all these particles and soot, while allowing the gas to pass through them.
So, we have to find a cleaning method that can eliminate all that built up dirt and is also gentle enough to avoid damaging its delicate structure (otherwise we will have no other choice but to buy a new filter).
One of the best methods is to use ultrasounds.
– How does it work?
The first thing we have to do is fill the tank of our ultrasonic cleaner with a cleaning solution: water on its own won’t be enough, so we’ll have to use a detergent prepared for this type of cleaning.
Then, we have to submerge the filter to be cleaned. There should be enough water to stop the filter from banging the sides of the tank. If you think you are wasting too much solution, consider buying a smaller cleaner system before skimping on the detergent.
Choose the frequency you want and you’ll have the best results in no time without damaging the structure of the filter.
